Market Visits

Les Deux Chevres is a short car (or slightly longer by bike), bus or train ride, from the centre of Dijon. Here on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the market is in full flow, and this is where we purchase our food supplies. Around the market are other speciality shops, cheese from Porcheret, patisserie from Pierre Hubert, chocolate from Fabrice Gillotte, and a wide selection of cafes and restaurants. A few steps away is the Antique Quarter, the moutarderie Fallot, and the Jacquemart clock on 12c Notre Dame de Dijon. We can tell you the best place to park to take advantage of all that this beautiful city has to offer.

Hiking

There are so many wonderful walks along the Cotes, however our two absolute favourites are the Chemin des Moines, which starts at the ruins of the Abbey St Vivant on the Hill of Vergy, and follows the route which the monks used to take, from the 10c onwards, through the forest of Mantuan, descending into the Hautes Cotes Village of Concoeur, famous for its blackcurrant production (cassis) and then along the top of the Cote, before descending into the wine village of Vosne Romanee, passing the most famous vineyards in the world, which used to belong to the monks, and are now owned by Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. There is a small village bistro at the start of the walk on the Hill of Vergy in village of Curtil-Vergy, which serves authentic burgundian cuisine in a village setting https://www.restaurantaupetitbonheur.com/ . The walk in total is 9.6km.

Our other favourite, is around the Hill of Corton, just to the north of Beaune. Leaving the car in Aloxe Corton, you can follow the track around the hill in an anti-clockwise direction, passing the beautiful village of Pernand Vergelesses on the north western side of the Hill, stopping if time and appetite permits at the excellent restaurant Le Charlemagne just outside Pernand Vergelesses https://www.lecharlemagne.fr/ before returning to the transport following the track around the hill. Total distance approximately 5km

The vast majority of tourists come to Burgundy in the ‘season’ from April to the end of October. However, if you enjoy walking, in between winery visits, and settling down for the evening before a log fire, winter is also a nice time to visit. The scenery can be magnificent after a hard frost, it is easier to get tastings, and no need to worry about restaurant reservations!

Cycling

Whether you are an experienced rider looking for a regular shot of energetic exercise, or merely wanting to tootle along between the vines, Burgundy is just great for cyclists. The various roads up the Cote provide magnificent cycling routes, on quiet roads, with little traffic, and usually dry and fine conditions. The Route des Grands Crus, which takes you through famous villages and vineyards, is easy for everyone.

If you would like some assistance en route, then electric bikes are available to hire from Burgundy Bike https://www.burgundybike.com/ and also Les 2 Roues Electriques in Dijon https://www.les-2-roues-electriques.fr/

A few bikes are also available at the hotel, free of charge.
